MISO recently wrapped up their Board of Directors meetings. One of the main topics of discussion was Long Range Transmission Plan (LRTP) Tranche 2.1, which when approved will reduce energy costs for people in the Midwest (we would love to be able to share some insight into the timeline and when these bill savings would come, but this is a multi-year process that is just getting under way).
Specifically discussed at the BoD meeting was the benefit to cost ratio. MISO recently conducted two LRTP workshops to discuss the benefit metrics used for Tranche 2.1. This set of 28 LRTP projects is estimated to cost $21.8 billion and provide up to $38.7 Billion in net benefits (see slide 20).
Unfortunately, none of these benefits will go to Louisianans in our region. This is why The Alliance continues to urge our regulators to not delay planning for our region’s projects, which will be addressed in Tranche 3. Currently Tranche 2.1 is going through the stakeholder feedback process, and will then move through the MISO approval process.
Other Board of Director discussions focused around affordability, reliability, and resilience, among other issues. The next BoD meetings will be December 10-12 in The Woodlands, TX. The December meeting is shaping up to be a historic set of meetings as this is where Tranche 2.1 is likely to receive the Board of Directors approval, meaning Tranche 2.1 will then move to state approval processes. Once Tranche 2.1 is approved, next up for MISO will be Tranche 2.2 which will address additional issues not addressed in Tranche 2.1.
