Renewable portfolio standard update: LPSC delays, yet again

March 11 - On Wednesday, March 10, the Louisiana Public Service Commission (LPSC) was scheduled to hear a presentation of LPSC staff's draft policy proposal for a renewable portfolio standard, a policy intended to develop renewable energy industries in Louisiana. However, commissioners failed to prioritize hearing the proposal and, after dragging out several agenda items, chose instead to yet again push back the procedural schedule for the docket.

“Unfortunately, the Commission's continued delay in implementing a renewable portfolio standard means that ratepayers will continued to be subject to the volatility of the natural gas market and our state will not see the economic development and job creation benefits that such a policy would bring,” said Alliance for Affordable Energy Legal and Regulatory Affairs Director Jesse George.

Under normal circumstances, this would push the hearing on the proposal back to April. However, key LPSC staff members will not be present at the April meeting, and the proposal will likely not be heard until the May LPSC Business and Executive meeting. A final vote on the policy was scheduled for the May meeting, and will have to be rescheduled.

This is the third time that the LPSC has pushed back the schedule on the renewable portfolio standard docket, which was opened in January of 2009.

We strongly encourage all our members, supporters, and everyone in Louisiana who wants to see a future of job creation and economic development through clean energy industries to write or call your Public Service Commissioner and ask him to stop wasting time, keep to the procedural schedule and pass a strong, binding renewable portfolio standard for Louisiana.
