The Alliance strongly advocates rebuilding with a focus on energy
efficiency renewable energy and smart growth principles, including an exemplary public transportation system. Doing so would help to improve the lives of residents by reducing energy consumption, costs, and the associated pollution while living more comfortably, for example, with less time wasted, trapped in our cars, and more disposable income from utility bill savings. We have experienced a tragedy, but we now have a one-time opportunity to better people's lives and should not allow it to slip away through haphazard rebuilding and redevelopment. We are starting a campaign to promote smart redevelopment and invite any of you who would like to add your ideas and voices to this effort to contact the Alliance. We have developed the following six principles to guide us in sustainable redevelopment:
-
Accountability to and participation by the New Orleans community
-
Mixed-Use, Accessible Neighborhoods
-
Sustainable renovation and rebuilding
-
Distributed power generation and alternative fuels
-
Coastal restoration and safeguarding from storms
-
Understanding and working to reverse global warming
